Discovering Wellington's Ancient Heart: The 800-Year-Old Rimu Tree 🌳✨
Share
My journey with NatureBoyMani is deeply rooted in connection—with the natural world, with ourselves, and with each other. Sometimes, you find places that embody all of these connections at once. For me, one such hidden gem lies just outside Wellington, New Zealand: a magnificent, ancient Rimu tree, standing tall for over 800 years. This special tree, often affectionately known as 'Moko', resides within the beautiful Ōtari-Wilton's Bush reserve.
I've had the privilege of visiting this wise old giant twice, and each time, the experience was profound, yet uniquely different.
My Solo Pilgrimage 🚶🌿
The first time I sought out the Rimu, it was a solo mission. I needed space to think, to breathe, and to simply be in the presence of something ancient and enduring. The hike itself is beautiful, winding through native bush. As I approached the clearing where the Rimu stands, I felt a sense of anticipation, almost like meeting a respected elder.
Standing beneath its massive canopy, touching its textured bark, I felt incredibly small, yet deeply connected. The air around it felt different – charged with centuries of life, growth, and quiet observation. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience of nature and offered a profound sense of peace and perspective. My mind, often buzzing with the noise of daily life, found a rare stillness here. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated connection with the earth.
A Romantic Evening Under the Stars ✨🌙
My second visit was entirely different, but just as magical. I decided to share this special place with someone on a date. We timed our walk for the late afternoon, planning to reach the tree as the day transitioned into evening.
As we walked, the setting sun began to paint the sky with incredible hues of orange, pink, and purple 🌅. Reaching the Rimu as dusk settled was breathtaking. The tree stood silhouetted against the twilight canvas, somehow even more majestic. As darkness deepened, the moon began to rise 🌕, and stars started to dot the sky above us ✨.
Sharing that quiet, awe-inspiring moment under the ancient branches, with the vastness of the universe unfolding above and the history of the land beneath our feet, was incredibly romantic. It wasn't about grand gestures, but about shared presence, wonder, and the simple beauty of nature and connection. It was a reminder that the deepest connections, whether with nature or another person, often flourish in moments of shared stillness and appreciation.
A History of Resilience and Advocacy 📜✊
This Rimu tree, 'Moko', isn't just old; it's a survivor with a powerful story deeply tied to the history of Ōtari-Wilton's Bush. I learned that in the past, parts of this native forest, including areas around this ancient Rimu, were under threat of being milled for timber. Can you imagine? Cutting down an 800-year-old living being, a silent witness to centuries of history, for commercial gain?
Thankfully, a dedicated local resident named Bob Fantl recognized the immense and irreplaceable value of this forest. He became a passionate advocate for its preservation, taking legal action and working tirelessly to protect a significant swathe of Ōtari forest from destruction. His efforts were instrumental in saving this precious area. Because of the dedication of people like Bob Fantl, this magnificent Rimu still graces the landscape today, a powerful testament to the impact one person can have in protecting our natural heritage.
In recognition of his crucial contribution, a viewing platform was later built at the base of 'Moko'. This platform not only allows visitors to admire the tree without causing damage, but a plaque on it also commemorates Bob Fantl's vital role in saving this part of the forest. The construction of this platform was even supported in part by a bequest from the Fantl family after Bob's passing, further cementing his legacy.
The Feeling It Leaves You With ❤️🌿
Visiting this Rimu is more than just a walk in the woods; it's an experience that stays with you. It's a feeling of being grounded, of connecting to something much larger and older than yourself. It’s a reminder of the quiet strength found in nature and the importance of protecting these sacred spaces. Knowing the history of how it was saved adds a layer of gratitude and respect when you stand before it. Whether you visit alone for solitude or with someone special to share a moment of wonder, this ancient Rimu offers a unique opportunity to reconnect, heal, and find a sense of belonging in the natural world.
If you're ever near Wellington and feel the pull to connect with ancient nature, I highly recommend seeking out 'Moko' at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush. It's a true hidden gem with a powerful story, waiting to share its centuries of wisdom with you.
